You're Using Gen AI to Go Faster. Harvard Says That's the Wrong Game Entirely

Here’s the hard truth, as revealed in a new Harvard Business Review article written by researchers at the BCG Henderson Institute: "If your only goal with generative AI is to speed up current processes at a lower cost, this is not a competitive advantage; this is a threshold to survive." 

They draw a clear parallel with the introduction of photography into the world of portraiture: "Photographers who introduced photography as a way to speed up the process still went out of business, because photography commoditized the fundamental value they were creating." And this, they say, is happening all over again as industries begin to adopt Gen AI.

If your entire AI strategy is simply to do the same things more quickly, then you are not gaining a competitive advantage; you are merely achieving a level of parity, but only until others can replicate this in a few months.

The Shift You Actually Need to Make: From Optimization to Reinvention

According to the HBR study, the firms that will reap the sustained competitive advantage from Gen AI are not the ones that simply try to get more efficiency from the same playbook. Rather, they’re the ones that leverage AI to find new sources of value, identifying areas in the customer experience that AI can uniquely help solve, designing new business models that become viable only when AI makes the cost of intelligence low enough, and positioning themselves in the ecosystem as the value pools change.

The way this plays out is that the strategic question shifts from “How can we use AI to make our current product 20% better?” to “What new problems can we solve that we couldn’t solve before, and what customers will pay for those problems?”

Why This Matters More Urgently Than Your Q2 AI Roadmap

The window of time in which you can take advantage of these new positions of value will not last forever. As Gen AI technology becomes a commodity, and it is becoming one fast, it is the companies that move first to create new positions in the market, not those who incrementally improve what they already have, that will really differentiate themselves. 

Your competitors who are taking this approach are not showing up in your efficiency metrics yet. They are defining the next category, and you are still refining the current one.

The question isn't 'How do we use AI to do our job better?' It's 'What job can we now do that we couldn't do before?' That's where durable advantage lives.

Your Agents Have Access to Everything. Are You Sure They're Safe?

As soon as your AI partner can touch your CRM, your data warehouse, or your internal ticketing system, your attack surface is now huge. Frontier is already live with clients like Uber, State Farm, and Intuit.

Nvidia Is Deploying AI Agents Inside Your Workforce, And Your Current Setup Can't Handle It

NVIDIA has been making some quiet moves, it seems. According to a report by Wired, the chipmaker is promoting its own open-source platform for artificial intelligence agents, dubbed NemoClaw, directly to the biggest players in the enterprise software industry, including the likes of Salesforce, Cisco, Google, Adobe, and CrowdStrike, ahead of its developer conference in San Jose.

NemoClaw is supposed to enable these firms to deploy autonomous AI agents that can perform complex multi-step tasks for their own employees.

But the best part? This is supposed to be doable even if you’re not using NVIDIA chips.

This is not the kind of product that you can read about and then go back to your normal activities and not think about it anymore. This is the beginning of what could be the biggest change in the way we think about infrastructure since the rise of cloud computing.

Open Source Doesn't Mean 'Safe', Ask Meta

Before you dismiss this as flashy but far away, let’s look at what’s already happening out there in the real world. NemoClaw is taking a clear lead from OpenClaw, the viral open-source AI agent tool that ran locally on users’ machines and performed autonomous tasks.

OpenClaw was so popular and so unpredictable that Meta told employees to stop using it on company machines entirely. But why? A Meta AI safety executive publicly admitted that the reason was that an agent running on her own machine suddenly began mass-deleting her emails.

NVIDIA’s play is to incorporate security and privacy tooling into NemoClaw from the start. But the security layer is still in development. The risk that poorly governed AI agents pose to your own environment is not.

Why Nvidia Is Going Open Source, And What It Really Means for You

The key takeaway you need to understand as a strategic thinker is this: Nvidia has always based its software leadership on CUDA, a closed system in which developers are locked into Nvidia hardware. 

Going with the open-source approach of NemoClaw is a deliberate move towards becoming the default infrastructure for enterprise AI agents on all chipsets. For you, this means one thing: you need to prepare for a flood of NemoClaw-compatible tools, integrations, and sales pitches coming your way in the next few weeks following the formal GTC unveiling.

If you wait until then to plan for agentic AI, you’ll end up pursuing reactive solutions from the most aggressive sales organizations in enterprise technology sales organizations. Instead, you should establish your requirements, governance rules, data access rules, and orchestration architecture on your own initiative.

The organizations that win the agentic AI era aren't the ones that adopted fastest. They're the ones who governed best from day one.

What You Should Be Doing This Week

Before the GTC reveal changes the subject, take a moment to ponder three questions introspectively:

Which processes in your company have the greatest risk from autonomous agents?

Which processes have the greatest opportunity for benefit from agent-based automation?

Have you documented your stance on AI agents that operate autonomously as part of your existing IT and compliance framework?

If you can’t answer these three questions, guess what? Your competition, currently sitting through the NemoClaw sales pitches, can.

Intel Called It Open Source for 4 Years. They Lied, And Your Dev Team Paid the Price

Intel has rolled out the XeSS 3 SDK on GitHub, and the buzz from the developer community is that it’s a success for accessibility. But let’s take a closer look at what’s really going on here. What Intel has provided on GitHub is not source code, but rather Windows DLLs for the library: libxess.dll, libxell.dll, and libxess_fg.dll.

It’s not the same thing as providing source code. It may look like source code is open and accessible, but the reality is that it’s not.

This is important to your developers. You can use the XeSS 3 library, but you can’t examine it, audit it for security issues, port it to other platforms, or extend it beyond what Intel has already done.

This Wasn't a Surprise, It Was a Pattern You've Seen Before

In 2021, Anton Kaplanyan of Intel announced that XeSS would be an open-source technology. Fast forward four years with three major releases of XeSS 1, XeSS 2, and XeSS 3, and nothing has changed. Intel has quietly removed the announcements of its open-source technology from its website. The answer has always been the same for developers waiting for XeSS: Windows binary only, no source, and no Linux support.

Let’s compare this with AMD’s FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution), which has fully embraced the concept of openness. Developers can read, modify, and contribute to the actual source code. For any organization planning its infrastructure for the long term, this is exactly the kind of data you would want to base your decision on.

The Real Cost to Your Business Isn't Technical, It's Strategic

If you’re in the business of providing products and services that leverage the performance of the underlying graphics stack, the performance of AI upscaling, and the performance of frame generation technologies, enterprise visualization, simulation tools, and design tools, then the Intel vs. open source debate is not just an abstract debate.

It’s about your dependency on the vendor, your path forward with cross-platform support, and your ability to support your customers on Linux platforms. In the world we’re living in today, with XeSS 3 not being supported on the Linux platform, that means you’re excluding your customers and your users on that platform.

AMD’s openness is strategic flexibility. NVIDIA’s DLSS is performance leadership. Intel’s XeSS is a GitHub link and a promise that’s been delayed four straight years.

What This Means for How You Evaluate Vendor Transparency

The problem with XeSS is not the technology itself; it’s simply a canary in the coal mine that serves as a useful litmus test to ask your organization an important question when dealing with any and every AI and infrastructure technology vendor you’re working with today: when they say they’re “open,” what does that really mean? 

As the number of AI technologies grows and the vendors that provide these technologies tout “openness” as a key differentiator, the chasm between what’s claimed and what’s actually “open” will grow.
