Samsung Unveils Gauss 2: Next-Gen AI for Smarter Galaxy Features

Samsung has introduced its latest Generative AI model, Gauss 2, building on the foundation of its first-generation model launched last year. With enhanced performance and efficiency, Gauss 2 is set to power the Galaxy AI features across Samsung’s ecosystem.

Gauss 2: Multimodal and Versatile

Revealed during the Samsung Developer Conference in South Korea, Gauss 2 represents a significant leap in AI innovation. As a multimodal model, it can process various data types simultaneously, including text, images, and code. Samsung has already implemented Gauss 2 for internal use, with over 60% of developers in the DX division utilizing it for tasks like coding assistance (via the Code.AI assistant), document summarization, email drafting, and translation. It is also being used in call centers to automate the categorization and summarization of customer calls.

Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, President, CTO of Samsung DX, and Head of Samsung Research, emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge software, including AI and data analytics, to enhance user experiences.   • Wireless Telecom Consolidation: Deloitte anticipates a surge in wireless telecom mergers and acquisitions, particularly in Europe, starting in 2025. This trend is expected to create a more sustainable wireless ecosystem, especially in smaller markets.

  • Enterprise AI Infrastructure: By 2025, half of global enterprises are projected to invest in on-premise AI infrastructure to enhance data security, reduce latency, and decrease reliance on cloud services. Meanwhile, the global edge AI hardware market is forecasted to surpass $100 billion, driven by demand for AI-enabled devices and applications that offer greater control over data privacy.

  • 5G and 6G Development: Although 5G standalone (SA) networks have been rolling out globally, Deloitte predicts that challenges in adoption and monetization will cause telcos to slow their investments in 5G SA, potentially delaying 6G development, which is expected later this decade. However, advancements in business and operations support systems (B/OSS) could unlock 5G’s full potential, with the B/OSS market predicted to grow to $70 billion by 2025 from $63 billion in 2023, driven by telcos modernizing systems to enable innovative services.

  • Fixed Wireless Access (FWA): Contrary to popular belief, FWA adoption is expected to grow by approximately 20% annually in 2025 and 2026, bolstered by 5G technology. This growth could challenge traditional broadband providers like cable and DSL, leading to subscriber losses and pricing pressures.

Deloitte concludes that by addressing these pivotal challenges, the TMT sector is well-positioned to drive innovation and lay the foundation for the next era of technological advancements.

Lightricks Takes on Big Tech with Open-Source AI Video Model

Lightricks, the Israeli company renowned for its viral photo-editing app Facetune, has announced a bold initiative to challenge the dominance of major tech giants in generative AI. The company unveiled LTX Video (LTXV), an open-source AI model capable of producing five seconds of high-quality video in just four seconds. By releasing this model freely, Lightricks aims to foster innovation and counter proprietary AI systems from industry leaders like OpenAI, Adobe, and Google.

Unlike Meta, Lightricks focuses exclusively on the model itself, leaving infrastructure to platforms like Hugging Face. “We’re not monetizing this model right now,” Farbman emphasized. “It’s about widespread adoption, even on gaming PCs or local hardware.”

Competing with established players such as Adobe, which integrates generative AI into its Creative Cloud suite, won’t be easy. However, Lightricks sees open-source innovation as its best path forward. “To compete with giants, startups must ensure their technology is open and accessible to academia and the wider community,” Farbman explained.

Numenta Launches Open-Source AI Model Inspired by Brain Function

Numenta, supported by the Gates Foundation, has introduced an open-source AI model designed to use less energy and data compared to current AI technologies.

Co-founded by Jeff Hawkins, the creator of Palm Computing and the Palm Pilot, Numenta draws heavily on Hawkins’ passion for neuroscience. This influence was evident in the Palm Pilot’s handwriting recognition feature, which utilized early AI principles.

Unlike most AI systems today, which rely on neural networks loosely modeled on the human brain, Numenta proposes a different understanding of brain function. The company aims to convince AI researchers to explore its unique approach.

A Shift from Traditional AI Training

Conventional AI systems process vast quantities of static data—such as extensive libraries of text or images—through thousands of computing chips. These systems require weeks or months of training, consuming massive amounts of electricity, to generate human-like responses.

Numenta’s method, however, emulates how brain cells gather incremental information from senses like sight and touch, creating dynamic models of the world that adapt in real-time to changing conditions. This approach mirrors how young children learn new objects and skills.

The company envisions its method being applied to various fields, including robotics for navigation and writing tools. To encourage adoption, Numenta has made its computer code available as open source, inviting researchers and companies to experiment with its innovative model.

Numenta’s move aligns with a trend set by other companies like Meta Platforms, which have also released open-source AI technology. While Meta’s strategy has helped it compete with rivals like OpenAI, it has also resulted in its technology being utilized by unexpected actors, such as the Chinese military.

Subutai Ahmad, Numenta’s CEO, acknowledged the challenges of monitoring how open-source technology is used. “The technology is still in its early stages, and how we handle these issues will depend on its future development,” Ahmad told Reuters. “These are critical matters that require thoughtful consideration.” By offering its AI model as open source, Numenta aims to drive innovation while carefully navigating the complexities of responsible technology usage.

OpenAI Eyes Browser Market, Challenging Google’s Dominance

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly exploring the development of a web browser that integrates its chatbot technology. The company has also been in discussions or struck agreements to power search features, according to a report by The Information on Thursday.

The report revealed that OpenAI has presented its search-related product to website and app developers, including Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite, and Priceline, citing individuals familiar with the prototypes or designs.

These moves could position OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, as a direct competitor to Google, which dominates the browser and search markets. OpenAI has already entered the search space with its SearchGPT product.

Competitive Landscape

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has been ramping up its AI efforts since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. In response, Google introduced its generative AI chatbot, Gemini, last year.

Alphabet’s stock declined by about 1% in extended trading on Thursday, following a 5% drop during regular trading hours.

The dominance of Google’s Chrome browser has also come under scrutiny, with the U.S. Department of Justice suggesting that Alphabet might need to divest Chrome to prevent monopolistic control over online search.

Partnerships and Future Plans

OpenAI has reportedly discussed integrating AI features into Samsung devices, a significant partner of Google, according to sources cited in the report. OpenAI already collaborates with Apple, powering the “Apple Intelligence” features found in new iPhone models.

Despite these initiatives, the report emphasized that OpenAI is not close to launching its own web browser at this stage.

Amazon Doubles Down on Anthropic with $4 Billion Investment

Amazon announced on Friday that it will invest an extra $4 billion in Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup founded by former OpenAI researchers. This brings Amazon’s total investment in the San Francisco-based company to $8 billion, though the tech giant remains a minority stakeholder, according to Anthropic.

Amazon’s previous $2.75 billion investment in March marked its largest external investment in its three-decade history. Combined with the initial $1.25 billion commitment announced in September 2023, Amazon’s total investment in Anthropic highlights its strategic focus on generative AI. Despite its significant financial backing, Amazon does not hold a seat on Anthropic’s board.

Anthropic’s Milestones and Innovations

The announcement comes shortly after Anthropic introduced a major advancement: AI agents capable of using computers to perform complex, multi-step tasks. This new “Computer Use” feature, included in Anthropic’s latest AI models, enables the technology to interpret screen content, interact with software, browse the internet, and execute tasks just as humans do.

“This tool allows AI to use computers in nearly the same way we do,” said Jared Kaplan, Anthropic’s chief science officer, in a CNBC interview. He noted that the AI can handle tasks involving tens or even hundreds of steps. Early access to the tool was provided to Amazon, with beta testers including companies like Asana, Canva, and Notion.

Product Expansion

Anthropic has launched several key products this year:

  • Claude Enterprise: Aimed at businesses seeking to integrate Anthropic’s AI solutions.
