The era of AI agents is officially here, with NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang envisioning a future where IT departments transform into "HR departments for AI." At the CES 2025 event, Huang predicted that these departments will be responsible for onboarding, managing, and maintaining a new generation of AI agents.

“In the future, IT teams won’t just manage software—they’ll nurture and improve digital agents, integrating them into companies for diverse tasks,” Huang explained. He emphasized that these agents, designed to work alongside human employees, will revolutionize automation and efficiency across industries, calling AI agents a "multi-trillion dollar opportunity."

Huang’s CES keynote offered a glimpse into NVIDIA's projects, such as Cosmos and Project DIGITS, which aim to seamlessly integrate AI agents into industries and daily life. Supporting this vision, RagaAI founder Gaurav Agarwal highlighted how NVIDIA is laying the groundwork for agent-based AI.

At the Microsoft AI Tour in Bengaluru, CEO Satya Nadella introduced Copilot Studio, a no-code platform simplifying the creation of AI agents. "AI is like a co-pilot for work," Nadella said, showcasing how AI can streamline tasks, such as preparing agendas or taking notes in healthcare scenarios. Nadella also revealed Copilot Actions, a tool that enables cross-application workflows within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

Similarly, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman foresees AI agents entering the workforce by 2025, significantly boosting productivity. Meanwhile, Google launched Gemini 2, showcasing agent-like capabilities, and released a whitepaper exploring AI agents’ potential.

However, some experts believe AI agents may take longer to reach full deployment. Logan Kilpatrick, a senior product manager at Google, estimates that mainstream adoption could take another year, citing a gap between capabilities and large-scale production. OpenAI also faces challenges like mitigating "prompt injection" attacks that could compromise agents’ instructions.

Huang’s vision underscores the need for enterprise IT teams to ensure AI agents are secure and compliant with data access policies. Okta CTO Bhawna Singh emphasized the importance of authentication and authorization frameworks to manage data accessibility for agents.

Tools like NVIDIA's NeMo streamline the onboarding of AI agents, allowing companies to train agents with custom vocabulary and behavior. Similarly, AI startup Composio introduced AgentAuth, a platform for integrating AI agents with third-party tools, supporting protocols like OAuth and API keys. Composio’s chief, Karan Vaidya, explained that the platform addresses the challenges of connecting agents to tools like Salesforce and HubSpot.

The market for AI agents is poised for exponential growth, projected to surge from $5.1 billion in 2024 to $47.1 billion by 2030. As the market matures, vertical AI agents tailored to specific industries are expected to dominate, akin to the evolution of software.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff described AI agents as "digital labor," enhancing support, sales, and marketing. Freshworks, an Indian SaaS company, launched an updated version of Freddy AI, an agent capable of resolving 45% of customer support requests and 40% of IT service requests in beta.

The adoption of AI agents will likely be most impactful in sectors with robust systems, such as sales, marketing, and finance. These departments can easily integrate agents into existing platforms like CRM and ERP systems, according to Ramprakash Ramamoorthy of Zoho and ManageEngine.

India is also witnessing innovation in AI agents. Bengaluru-based KOGO AI, co-founded by Praveer Kochhar and Raj K Gopalakrishnan, recently launched an AI agent store. Kochhar explained that they are developing agents capable of functioning as data scientists or business analysts, generating insightful questions to optimize workflows.
